One Year GCSE for International Students

Your UK Academic Journey Starts Here

Gain internationally recognised GCSE qualifications.

GCSE qualifications are widely recognised by universities and employers around the world. The GCSE curriculum encourages critical thinking, problem-solving and in-depth knowledge, making it an ideal pathway for further education in the UK, including A-Levels or the IB

What does the One Year GCSE include?

  • Cambridge Assessment English. All students sit a formal Cambridge English examination, providing an internationally recognised English language credential alongside their GCSEs.
  • GCSE Mathematics. Studied and examined by all students, providing the numerical foundations required for virtually every A-level pathway.
  • Optional Academic Subjects. Students choose additional GCSE subjects — such as Combined Science, Business Studies or Geography — to align with their intended A-level choices.
  • Sport (Compulsory). Regular physical education sessions are built into the timetable for all GCSE students, supporting physical health and wellbeing.
  • PSHE Lessons. Personal, Social, Health and Economic education helps students navigate life in the UK, develop resilience and build the skills needed for adult life.
  • Academic Enrichment (Wednesdays & After School). Students can choose from a wide range of enrichment options: debate club, photography, public speaking, baking, and more.
  • Supervised Evening Study. At least two hours of quiet study are timetabled each weekday evening, supervised by House Managers, creating a structured homework culture.

Small Classes, Big Impact

With an average class size of just 7 students, teachers know every learner by name. Individual attention and personalised feedback are the norm, not the exception. When a subject grows in popularity, we open a new class rather than let standards slip.

Even in the most popular subjects we insist on small classes. The reason for having small classes is very simple. The greater the amount of individual attention that the student receives, the greater the chances are that the student will achieve better grades. Everybody is given the opportunity to contribute. In addition, small classes create safe environments in which students are more willing to participate and ask questions.

In our rigorous and well-structured lessons, meaningful and positive relationships are built, a determined work ethic is created and each student achieves their full potential.

One Year GCSE FAQs

Who is the One Year GCSE programme designed for?

The programme is specifically designed for international students aged 15 and over who want to gain UK GCSE qualifications, improve their English and prepare for progression to A-levels or other UK qualifications. It is the UK equivalent of Year 11 and is a full academic year in duration.

Do I need to speak English to join the GCSE programme?

Students are expected to have a foundation level of English sufficient to benefit from academic study. However, Earlscliffe’s English for Academic Purposes support means students with developing English can still thrive — language development is built into every lesson, and Cambridge English is studied and examined as a core subject. Contact our admissions team to discuss your current level.

How many GCSE subjects will I study?

All students take Cambridge Assessment English and GCSE Mathematics. In addition, students select optional subjects — such as Combined Science, Computer Science or Business Studies — to complement their intended A-level pathway. Our admissions team helps each student build the right combination for their goals.

What happens after I complete the One Year GCSE?

Most students progress to the Earlscliffe A-level or Pre A-level programme. Strong GCSE results also open pathways to the International Baccalaureate or further study overseas. Earlscliffe’s Careers Institute and university guidance team support each student in planning the best next step.

Is boarding available and compulsory?

Most GCSE students board at Earlscliffe, living in one of six boarding houses. Boarding is central to the Earlscliffe experience and provides the structured study environment, pastoral care and community that international students need to succeed. Please contact admissions to discuss your specific circumstances.
