Sustainability Week in Action at Earlscliffe ♻️

Posted: 3rd March 2026

Sustainability Week at Earlscliffe was a dynamic and inspiring celebration of environmental awareness in action, bringing together students and staff in a shared commitment to protecting our planet.

As part of the wider family of schools within Dukes Education, Earlscliffe continues to strengthen its environmental focus, embedding sustainable thinking into everyday school life.

The week of activities was organised by Earlscliffe’s Sustainability Lead, Alexandra Day, who curated a thoughtful programme designed to inspire both reflection and practical change.

A Week of Purposeful Action

Unplugged Hour was observed, encouraging students in boarding houses to switch off non-essential lights and devices and fostering collaborative revision sessions, with students sharing a single laptop rather than using multiple devices.

We also launched the Eco Pledge Wall. Positioned at the heart of the school, it quickly filled with thoughtful and practical commitments from across the community, from pledges to use reusable water bottles to reducing single-use plastics. Sustainable Shoutouts from staff celebrated the everyday eco-friendly actions taking place around campus.

On Green Clothes Day, students swapped their uniforms for green items and contributed £1 donations to support local environmental charities.

The week concluded with Nature Breaks on Friday, as lessons moved outdoors! Teachers incorporated outdoor sessions into their timetables, encouraging students to observe and appreciate the world around them, reinforcing the powerful link between sustainability and wellbeing.

Sustainability Showcase

The highlight of the week was the Sustainability Showcase, held at the Cornerstone Church.

We were delighted to welcome Sally Cornelius, Group Sustainability Manager at Dukes Education, who delivered a thought-provoking talk on the environmental impact of technology. From examining the full life cycle of a mobile phone to revealing the surprising volume of water associated with individual AI searches and digital activity, her presentation challenged students to think more critically about the hidden environmental costs of modern life.

Students Ian and Orlando bravely took to the stage to present on corporate responsibility, encouraging their peers to question greenwashing and to hold organisations accountable for genuine sustainable practices.

Miss Day also highlighted the rapidly expanding world of careers in sustainability, emphasising that environmental responsibility now touches every industry and professional pathway.

Our brilliant school band kept the energy high with performances including Have You Ever Seen the Rain and Walking on Sunshine.

An Evolving Culture of Sustainability

The momentum continues this week with a digital decluttering initiative, encouraging students and staff to reduce digital waste and reconsider their online habits.

As part of the Dukes Education community, we are proud to play our role in shaping environmentally conscious global citizens.

Let’s continue to reflect on how small actions can create a big impact. 🌱
