Students working towards the Level 2 Qualification in Community Sports Leadership at Earlscliffe recently delivered a standout community session, leading a full athletics afternoon for Year 1 and Year 2 pupils at Sandgate Primary School.
The Sports Leaders qualification is one of several enrichment opportunities available to Earlscliffe students through our SCS (Sports, Culture and Service) programme, which takes place on Wednesday afternoons. Accredited by the Leadership Skills Foundation, the nationally recognised qualification is designed to develop students’ confidence, resilience and leadership abilities through practical, real-world experience in sport and physical activity, and last week’s session was a powerful example of exactly that.
The Earlscliffe Sports Leaders team planned and delivered a carousel of fun, inclusive athletics-based activities throughout the afternoon. From the outset, students took full responsibility for organising activities, demonstrating exercises, encouraging participation, and managing groups of younger children fulfilling the core aims of the qualification’s community leadership unit in a genuine, unscripted environment.
Sandgate Primary staff provided very positive feedback, highlighting the students’ professionalism, enthusiasm and their ability to engage younger pupils meaningfully. The children were fully involved throughout, and the afternoon concluded with every pupil receiving a participation certificate.
The session directly reflects the service and leadership strand of the SCS programme, which encourages students to contribute positively to the wider community while developing the soft skills (communication, time management, confidence) that Earlscliffe sees as central to a well-rounded education. This community outreach work also helps to strengthen Earlscliffe’s ongoing links with local schools in Folkestone.
The Level 2 Community Sports Leadership programme continues to be one of the most valuable offerings within SCS at Earlscliffe. It gives students hands-on experience all while earning a recognised qualification that complements their academic studies and strengthens their university and career applications.
