At Earlscliffe, education is never confined to the classroom. While academic focus is our cornerstone, we believe the real magic happens when energy is applied to a combination of learning, movement, and mindset. That’s why we place such strong emphasis on sport, physical activity, and personal growth – it’s what we like to call Earlscliffe energy.

Football and Basketball

Our sports programme offers both football and basketball to male and female players, with two to three professionally led training sessions each week, alongside regular competitive matches. Students at every skill level are welcomed, whether they’re training to win or just want to stay active, improve their technique, enhance communication skills, and be part of a team.

We believe team sports do more than develop physical skill – they build discipline, resilience, and collaboration. These are essential qualities that carry into the classroom, sharpening focus, boosting confidence, and supporting academic achievement.

Strength Beyond the Court and Pitch

At Earlscliffe, wellbeing is woven into the fabric of student life, reflecting our broader commitment to holistic care and personal development. As part of our BSA award-winning support for international students, we understand that academic success is deeply connected to how students feel – physically, emotionally, and socially.

Students benefit from subsidised access to a fully equipped gym, open throughout the week, alongside a wide range of group exercise classes designed to suit all fitness levels. Whether they prefer high-intensity training or a more mindful, restorative approach, these sessions play a vital role in helping students de-stress, regain focus, and build confidence.

Badminton is also available for students to play twice per week. And access to the running track is provided.

As we’ve said before, wellbeing in a boarding school setting isn’t a luxury – it’s essential. And at Earlscliffe, it’s part of every student’s journey.

Earlscliffe energy isn’t limited to the sports field or gym – it also drives our students to lead, inspire, and make a difference within the school community. Whether applying for a Head Student role, taking the initiative to lead a fundraising campaign, or contributing to a student working party, our students are encouraged to step up, speak out, and shape their environment. These leadership opportunities help develop confidence, creativity, and a strong sense of responsibility – all essential skills for life beyond Earlscliffe. It’s this same energy that empowers students to turn ideas into action and passion into progress.

In addition, a selection of enrichment activities are made available throughout the academic year. This includes:

  • Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

  • Tennis

  • Horse-riding

  • Hiking

  • Surfing and water sports

  • Weekend excursions: go-karting, paintballing, ice-skating, and more

We believe that giving students room to explore their passions – and discover new ones – fosters a deeper sense of identity, independence, and purpose. It’s this balance between academics, activity, and adventure that creates such a unique atmosphere on campus.
