Earlscliffe students take a hands-on approach to environmental initiatives

As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment, Earlscliffe students and staff have been rolling up their sleeves and taking real action to make a lasting difference.

Here are just a few examples:

Community Action: Litter Picking in the Park

In one of our recent environmental initiatives, students came together for a litter-picking session in the park. Students set a wonderful example by tidying up the well-loved neighbourhood spot and their hard work sparked conversations within school around civic responsibility and environmental care. By actively cleaning up shared spaces, students developed a deeper sense of ownership and pride in their surroundings.

Green Thumbs at Work: Gardening Club & Pond Care

Our Gardening Club is growing, with students dedicating time to maintain and improve green spaces on campus. A highlight of their work includes the care and maintenance of the school pond, preserving it as a safe haven for local wildlife. These activities foster biodiversity, offer practical gardening skills, and highlight the importance of nurturing our natural environment.

World Ocean’s Day

Sunday 8th June is World Ocean Day and so the Friday before will be recognised in Earlscliffe with fun awareness activities, such as Group Tutor quizzes about ocean facts, species identification, and conservation topics. Over the weekend, students will also be invited to join a calming evening of TV, watching the infamous Blue Planet with Sir David Attenborough (snacks provided).

Driving Change Through Recycling Awareness

Recycle Week was a true success at Earlscliffe. We kicked off the week with an informative assembly that explored the environmental impact of waste and the power of recycling. To support better habits across campus, we created our own recycling bin stickers that provide clear instructions on how to manage different waste materials.

Engineering Sustainable Innovation Workshop

This term a selection of Earlscliffe’s Year 12 students with a passion for engineering will attend Dukes House to enjoy an interactive day of career experiences. Students work as urban planners to design a sustainable town, balancing natural resources, infrastructure, and environmental challenges. Through strategic
decision-making and resource management, players will tackle real-world scenarios to build thriving communities in diverse regions.

Dukes Education Sustainability Conference

Miss Whatley joined a large group of other schools and colleges from the Dukes Education group at Dukes House in London to discuss how we can all work together to provide a more sustainable environment.

What’s Next?
This is just the beginning. With more eco-initiatives planned, including student-led projects and community events, Earlscliffe remains firmly focused on building a greener future. Next year we will have the Earlscliffe Book Swap library located in School House. And the students’ have been challenged to a “Switch-off Sunday” event, with a conscious effort to switch off any unnecessary lights, heating, etc. whilst also enjoying activities that are not device-based.

Together, we’re creating a more sustainable Earlscliffe – one initiative at a time.
