What a way to conclude Black History Month!
Earlscliffe had the privilege of welcoming the phenomenal Michael Gunning as our guest speaker. Michael isn’t just a world-class swimmer. He is living proof that perseverance, authenticity, and joy can transform a life and inspire countless others.

His visit perfectly reinforced our current PSHE lessons on racism and discrimination, while also complementing our recent celebration of Nigerian Independence Day earlier this month. The timing could not have been more meaningful.
His story captivated every student in the room. Michael spoke openly about:
- Navigating bullying and self-doubt during his school years
 • Facing discrimination and challenging the myth that ‘Black people don’t swim’
 • His journey to come out as gay and stand proudly in his identity
 • Filming a documentary with Tom Daley in Jamaica, where being gay is still criminalised
He reminded our students that real courage isn’t found in winning medals.
It comes from speaking up, supporting one another, and refusing to let prejudice silence you. His message was powerful: if someone treats you with disrespect, tell someone. Seek support. You deserve to be heard.
There were lighter moments too. Students loved hearing about his friendships with Rebecca Adlington, Usain Bolt and Adam Peaty. He even revealed his pre-race soundtrack: Ariana Grande! Michael also reconnected with his former teacher, Mrs Burkett, which was a lovely addition to the visit since he shared she had been his favourite!
The Q&A could have lasted all afternoon! Michael made time for every question and every selfie request! Our students left buzzing, hopeful, and deeply inspired.
We are so grateful for the honesty, warmth, and positivity he brought to Earlscliffe.
A role model with heart and a truly unforgettable end to Black History Month.
Thank you, Michael Gunning. You made a splash none of us will forget.
