In February, Earlscliffe Basketball Academy had the honour of welcoming Ryan Richards, a British-Jamaican basketball player, to lead a special training session for our basketball team.
Ryan’s journey is a remarkable story of perseverance and determination. Born and raised in Sittingbourne, Kent, he grew up on an unassuming street behind an industrial estate, where his passion for sports first took root. Driven by a hunger for growth and competition, Ryan would skip school and take the train to Ramsgate, where he played with his brother on a court behind the station. As a mixed-race child, he struggled with identity but found solace in basketball, where race and background became irrelevant the moment he stepped onto the court.
By the age of 15, Ryan had grown to an impressive 6ft 9in (now standing at 6ft 11in), catching the attention of British professional players based in Gran Canaria. Recognising his potential, he left school to pursue a basketball career in Spain, where he learned to use his size to his advantage.
In 2010, at the age of 19, Ryan reached a pivotal moment in his career when he became eligible for the NBA Draft. He was selected by the San Antonio Spurs, a team renowned for their international scouting and player development. Unfortunately, an MRI revealed a shoulder injury, leading to a being offered a rehabilitation program instead of a contract.
Despite this setback, Ryan seized other opportunities, going on to play professional basketball in 50 countries and representing Team GB on several occasions. Today, he is passionate about giving back to the next generation through his Richards Elite basketball camp in Rochester. His camp offers teenagers invaluable basketball training, mentorship, and personal development opportunities.Â
Ryan’s true passion lies in connecting with young people, inspiring them to chase their dreams. With plans to expand his camp this year, he is committed to empowering teenagers to believe in themselves and their potential.
Our students were incredibly fortunate to have the chance not only to be coached by such a talented player but also to learn from his inspiring story of resilience and determination. A special thanks to Stuart Hunt, Coach of Earlscliffe’s Basketball Academy, for organising this incredible opportunity for our basketball players!
