A Defining Feature of Our A‑Level Programme

At Earlscliffe, the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is not treated as an optional extra. Instead, it forms a core and defining part of our A‑level offering, reflecting our commitment to developing confident, independent and intellectually curious learners.

For our international students in particular, the EPQ provides a powerful bridge into the expectations and academic culture of UK universities, giving them a genuine advantage in applications, interviews and future undergraduate study.

What Is the EPQ?

The EPQ is a standalone Level 3 qualification that allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in significant depth. It is equivalent to half an A‑level and is widely recognised and respected by UK universities, including Russell Group institutions and Oxbridge.

Students design, plan and carry out an extended piece of independent work, which can take a range of formats, including:

A dissertation or research essay
A scientific or social investigation
A creative artefact (such as a film, artwork, prototype or composition)
A performance (such as a dramatic, musical or spoken‑word piece)

Whatever the format, every EPQ requires rigorous research, critical evaluation of sources, reflective analysis, and a structured final presentation.

What Does the EPQ Involve?

The EPQ is a carefully guided but student‑led process that mirrors the way students will be expected to work at university. At Earlscliffe, students are supported throughout by specialist supervisors and structured teaching sessions.

Students will:

Choose a topic they are genuinely passionate about
Formulate a focused research question or project aim
Conduct independent research using academic sources
Analyse, evaluate and synthesise information
Manage a long‑term project and meet staged deadlines
Produce a final written or practical outcome
Deliver a formal presentation on their findings

Alongside their final project, students maintain a reflective production log, encouraging them to think critically about their learning process, decisions and progress.
